FAQs

  • Standby generators are permanently installed next to your house and automatically turn on when you lose power. Since they utilize your existing natural gas or propane, they don’t need to be refueled.

Portable generators do not turn on automatically, have small fuel tanks, are unsafe, extremely loud, and unreliable. Although they can be good tools, they shouldn’t be thought of as a home backup solution.

  • For a full residential home backup, the average residence needs a 24-26kW generator.

We get calls all the time to service generators we didn’t install. 9/10 times it’s due to an undersized generator that was jimmy-rigged using too many relays trying to target home essentials (HVAC, large appliances, etc.) running during an outage, causing failure. Underpowering requires more “moving parts,” during an install, resulting in unreliability.

Your installer should always be transparent about backup expectations.

  • Truth is, most of the big names are very similar in performance/warranties. The installation & maintenance are more important than the brand.

Kohler is 150 years old, Briggs & Stratton is 115, Cummins is 104, and Generac is 65. Yet, Generac has roughly 70% market share. Although Generac makes a great product (we’ve installed hundreds), that 70% is a reflection of marketing.

Genfellas™ installs them all. We will pick the best product to fit your needs.

  • Every home is different. Many different factors dictate the cost; home size, gas type, service panel condition, home layout, etc. As of 2023, our average installs cost between 10k-20k.
